INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY A NASA study reported that employees who participated in regular exercise worked at full efficiency for the entire day, while average employees lost 50% efficiency for the final two hours. Participants also demonstrated increased concentration and decision-making abilities. Dallas Police noted a 39% increase in commendations after a fitness-lifestyle program was introduced to officers.
LOWER ABSENTEEISM
DuPont reduced absenteeism by 47.5% over 6 years when 29,315 blue-collar employees enrolled in a fitness program at 4 sites. General Mills calculated that a reduction in absenteeism resulted in a payback of over $3 for each dollar spent on its health promotion program in 1985 and 1986.
HIGHER MORALE A Johnson & Johnson study found that employee attitude changes were greater at health promotion worksites with significant positive attitude changes noted in the categories of organizational commitment, supervision, working conditions, job security, and compensation. LOWER
HEALTH CARE COSTS General Electric’s 18-month study of fitness program members showed a 38% decrease in health care spending versus a 21% increase in costs for non-participants. A study of Steelcase employees reported 55% lower annual health care claims for fitness program participants. In a Canadian government study, 47% of participants in an employee fitness program at the Canada Life Assurance Company reported that they felt more alert, had better rapport with co-workers and generally enjoyed there work more. |
